Literacy New York Greater Capital Region (LNYGCR) changes lives and builds community by strengthening literacy skills. Through student-centered education, LNYGCR helps adults with basic needs in reading, writing or speaking the English language achieve their goals as individuals, family members, workers, and citizens. The organization provides literacy services to adults in Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties. These services include tutoring by trained volunteers in Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages.
Nationally, the United States is ranked 49th among 150 nations in its literacy rates. More than 20 percent of adults age 16 and older read at or below a fifth grade level. In New York State, more than two million people have severe reading problems.
There are many reasons why some adults are not able to read…you can be a reason why they can! There are many ways to help… by volunteering as a tutor, attending a LNYGCR sponsored event or supporting its efforts by making a donation.
Please join MicroKnowledge in supporting this important community organization at Applebee’s “dining to donate” day on Monday, March 24 from 11 am to midnight at the 555 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham Applebee’s. Literacy New York Greater Capital Region will receive 10 percent of each check, if accompanied by a voucher. Contact Nancy LaPietro at (518) 786-1181 if you would like a voucher.
Every day, more and more learners seek help as they strive to improve their way of life, increase their confidence and concentrate on becoming more integrated into the communities. You can help them reach their goals through your support of LNYGCR.
